"Willards" w as truly unlike anything that I have heard. A few things jumped out at me in the well placed melodies. I thought it was innovative and vulnerable songwriting I could only liken to Denison Witmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) The vocals on the song had the very strong, yet subtle, haunting, hide-and-seek-champion vibe that I would liken to Elliot Smith (I hope I don’t sound too terribly cliché in this assessment). The music really puts me into this Jimmy Buffet relaxation mode that takes me on a Willie Wonka style boat ride through rivers of real chocolate, music from the Counting Crows, and the needy/confused feeling of staring at light when you’ve been alone in the dark look at nothing in particular for a few hours. In short, a solid and an oddly beckoning siren-song! I like it a lot.
"Sour Mash and Gasoline" really took me by surprise with the recording quality, first off. The harmonies were super solid and like ambrosia dripping into my ears. Again, the Counting Crows come to my mind. The irony of this song is that it’s clearly very pure Americana and you are from the UK! I love things like that. I really like the placement of the harmonica on this song. The song is like driving through a small Midwestern town and looking at the people at the service station. You know what you are seeing, but you’re not really thinking about it because by the time you normally would, your car has passed by and the song is over.
